Sports. Education. Leadership.
Mädchen Sports Foundation
Empowering the girl child through sports, education, and community leadership.
We use sport as a practical pathway into school retention, confidence, mentorship, life skills, and safer community spaces for girls in Central Wakiso District.
Community-rooted programs built around girls, schools, families, and local leaders.
Our Mission
Building confidence and opportunity through play.
Our mission is to use sports participation as a tool to keep girls engaged in school, build confidence and life skills, and prepare them for future academic and vocational success.
Our History
Born from an urgent need to protect, support, and empower young women in Uganda.
Derived from the German word for "girl," Mädchen Sports Foundation was born out of an urgent need to protect, support, and empower young women in Uganda.
In 2022, as the world emerged from the devastating COVID-19 pandemic, the toll on the girl child was undeniably severe. Uganda experienced some of the longest school closures globally, leaving millions of girls without their safest environment. According to data from the UNFPA and Ministry of Health, teenage pregnancies surged dramatically during and immediately following the lockdowns, with over 31,500 adolescent pregnancies recorded every single month, averaging more than 1,000 cases daily. Nationally, the teenage pregnancy rate stagnated at a staggering 25%, the highest in East Africa, alongside a critical rise in early marriages, permanent school dropouts, and mental health crises.
Responding to this profound socio-economic shock, Mädchen Sports Foundation was established as a grassroots community initiative. Our mission was simple yet powerful: use the transformative power of sports as a gateway to education, mentorship, and counseling. Through sports, we create safe spaces to address critical issues including climate change awareness, mental health, and sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR), while actively combating early marriages and teenage pregnancy.
What began as a passionate community response has since evolved. Today, Mädchen Sports Foundation is a fully fledged, government-registered and approved Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in Uganda, dedicated to scoring long-term goals for girls' empowerment.
